Six Sigma is at its simplest a set of practices designed to improve manufacturing processes and eliminate defects, aligning perfectly with the Lean manufacturing principles which support the concept of continuous improvement and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), a method for improved equipment availability through better utilization of maintenance and production resources.

Overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and total effective equipment performance (TEEP) are measurements that report the overall utilization of facilities, time and material for manufacturing operations. These high level performance indicators can directly indicate the gap between actual and ideal performance.
